The recent cyclone has been and gone. How were you affected by its devastating impact?
Even if you got through relatively unscathed, the topic I want to talk about today is still important — especially to help prevent further health impacts following the aftermath of this cyclone.
Part of what the cyclone brought was rain, floods, dampness, and humidity. These conditions create the perfect breeding ground for mould in your home.
Why Is Mould a Problem?
Mould exposure can have far-reaching health impacts, particularly for those already vulnerable to respiratory and immune system challenges.
It’s now crucial to be proactive ……
Check for any areas that may have mould growth and stay vigilant, especially in corners of the house, ceilings, walls, carpets, bathrooms, and behind furniture (especially along external walls).
These areas can be warm, moist areas where spores thrive often without being visible.
Once visible, mould can appear in various colours — brown, black, green, or even white.
Signs to Watch Out For
Mould can be sneaky, growing in hidden places before becoming visible.
Here are some clues that mould could be growing in your home:
- Musty or earthy smells
- Water stains or discolouration on walls or ceilings
- Peeling or bubbling paintwork
Bathrooms are especially prone to condensation, so be sure to check walls and ceilings regularly and keep the space well-ventilated after showers.
It’s also important to check curtains, blinds, air conditioning units, inside cupboards, ceiling spaces, and stored linen or clothing — especially in rarely opened cupboards.
I once discovered mould growing through a light fixture due to hidden water damage, and it spread quickly! That’s why early action is key.
Health Symptoms to Look Out For
Breathing in mould spores can lead to symptoms like persistent cough, sinus infections, constant sneezing, headaches, brain fog, worsening asthma, increased allergy responses, unexplained fatigue, and skin rashes.
I once worked with a family where the mother experienced some of these symptoms.
After investigating, I discussed the concept of mould exposure. The client then told me of a leaking roof they were trying to get fixed. The leak was above her bedroom.
Until the roof and leak could be fixed, I advised her to relocate to another room and closely monitor her symptoms. After sealing off the affected bedroom and settling into a different room she noticed a significant improvement in her health
Effective Ways to Eliminate Mould
Forget bleach — it only discolours mould but doesn’t kill it. Instead, try these solutions:
- Clove Oil Solution: Mix clove essential oil with a solubiliser and water in a spray bottle. Spray it over mould-affected areas, leave for 10 minutes, then wipe clean.
- White Vinegar: Spray undiluted white vinegar directly onto the mould and leave for 10 minutes before wiping down.
- Hydrogen Peroxide Solution: Another powerful option for killing mould.
Using a dehumidifier can also help reduce moisture levels inside your home. Open windows regularly to allow fresh air to circulate.
Supporting Your Health Post-Exposure
If you’re experiencing symptoms like those listed above, supporting your body’s natural detox pathways is important.
Focus on supporting your liver, gut health, and immune system to improve toxin elimination and reduce reactivity to mould exposure.
I’ve worked with clients where only one family member experienced severe symptoms despite everyone living in the same house. The difference? Their ability to eliminate toxins effectively. By supporting the body’s detox systems, we reduced their reactivity to the mould.
Final Thoughts
I urge you — please be proactive. After the cyclone, check your home carefully and eliminate any mould before it takes hold.

This is how gut microbes can influence weight!
Probiotics can help you gain weight or lose weight by interacting with our genetics, food and metabolism.
And yes, I did say lose or gain weight……..
Firstly, let me explain that the trillions of microbes in the gut need to be varied, meaning that there should be a large variety of species. There are many different species (or breeds) of microbes, and they all have their place in aiding health — the more variety and balance, the better health results.
Back to the weight loss or weight gain issue….
Do you eat yogurt and berries for breakfast? Thinking that it’s helping you lose weight?
Well, Lactobacillus acidophilus (like the species found in yoghurt) has been connected to weight gain.
I am not saying throw your yoghurt and berries in the bin. Instead, I am suggesting looking at the overall picture. If Lactobacillus acidophilus is the predominant micro-organism of the gut, then weight gain can result.
It is about the variety of species of gut microbes. Imagine if we only have trained german shepherd guard dogs in the world. It may be a safe world, but I am sure that other breeds may be more suitable as a family pet.
While Lactobacillus acidophilus is associated with weight gain, other Lactobacillus species correlate with weight loss.
Species like Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus gasseri, and Bifidobacteria animalis have been found to support weight loss.
Want to lose weight?
Look at your gut flora to support your goal.
Tests can be performed to identify the predominant species of the gut, and specific species can be utilised to support weight changes.
