As we find ourselves in the midst of winter, I know that the weather varies greatly across Australia. While Queensland might enjoy milder temperatures, other parts of the country are experiencing chilly and brisk days. Many of my clients from the southern states have mentioned how cold it is.
Given the season, it’s crucial to talk about bolstering your immune system to help fend off the infections that are prevalent right now. We’re seeing a surge in rhinovirus, influenza, pneumonia, and even new varieties of COVID-19 circulating in the community.
However, with a robust immune system, your body can defend itself against these viruses. So, today, we’ll explore some effective ways to support your immune system throughout the winter.
One of my favourite approaches involves the use of medicinal mushrooms.
These remarkable mushrooms have been cherished for centuries by various ancient cultures for their myriad health benefits. Some of these mushrooms are even celebrated for their anti-aging properties and their ability to support the body through various challenges.
They are particularly powerful because many of them are adaptogens, which means they help the body adapt to the stresses and demands of the environment.
Given our busy modern lives and the multitude of pressures we face, these adaptogenic mushrooms can be incredibly beneficial.
While there are numerous medicinal mushrooms out there, today, I want to focus on three specific types that I frequently recommend to my clients for immune support.
These are not the only beneficial mushrooms available, but they are certainly some of the most effective ones I’ve encountered.
When I mention mushrooms, what comes to mind?
Perhaps you’re picturing the common button mushroom, which you might toss into a breakfast scramble with your eggs.
However, the medicinal mushrooms I’m referring to are quite different.
Today, we’re focusing on shiitake, reishi, and cordyceps – three extraordinary medicinal mushrooms with remarkable health benefits.
These mushrooms have far more beneficial effects than just a culinary delight; they’re potent natural remedies.
While there are many other beneficial varieties, we’ll delve into those in future discussions.
For now, let’s explore these three and understand why they’re so valued.
In Western herbal medicine, we often use these medicinal mushrooms in formulations. These medicinal mushrooms are packed with beneficial compounds like flavonoids, polysaccharides, beta-glucans, and lentinans. These constituents are known to support the immune system and possess antiviral, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties.
1. Shiitake Mushrooms
These large mushrooms are well-known for their health benefits. Shiitake mushrooms act as adaptogens, helping the body adapt to stress and environmental changes. This adaptogenic property support overall health and resilience, making shiitake a fantastic addition to your winter wellness routine.
Shiitake mushrooms are a powerhouse of health benefits, traditionally known for their antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. Incorporating shiitake into your diet is a wonderful way to support and protect your body against various pathogens. Additionally, shiitake mushrooms are anti-inflammatory, meaning they help reduce inflammation in the body. They are also rich in antioxidants, which combat oxidative stress – what I like to refer to as the “rusting process” of the body.
One of the most impressive qualities of shiitake mushrooms is their role as an immune modulator. This means they help balance and regulate the immune system, bringing everything into harmony. Shiitake mushrooms have numerous protective properties, safeguarding various organs and systems within the body. They are particularly effective in dealing with recurring infections and chronic health issues.
Personally, I love incorporating shiitake mushrooms into my meals. They can be found both dried and fresh, making them a versatile ingredient. I often add them to soups and stir-fries, especially during this time of year, to boost my family’s immune system. You can even get creative and use them as a pizza topping.
Shiitake is also available in powdered, capsule, and liquid forms, making it easy to take medicinally if needed. However, I always recommend starting with incorporating them into your foods. If additional support is necessary, they can be included in a herbal formulation tailored to your body’s specific needs.
So, why not start adding shiitake mushrooms to your meals today? It’s a simple and delicious way to bolster your immune system and enjoy their myriad health benefits.
2. Reishi
The next medicinal mushroom I’d like to discuss is another favourite of mine: Reishi. Known traditionally as the “mushroom of immortality,” reishi has been revered by ancient cultures for its potent anti-aging properties.
Like shiitake, reishi is an adaptogen that helps the body adapt to stress and maintain balance. It also acts as an immune modulator, balancing the immune system to ensure it functions optimally. Reishi boasts antibacterial and antiviral properties, making it an excellent ally in supporting overall health.
One of the remarkable benefits of reishi is its impact on cognition. It’s known as a cognitive enhancer, aiding in brain function and memory. This makes it an invaluable herb for anyone dealing with immune imbalances or fatigue from chronic diseases. Regular use of reishi can provide significant support and resilience in such conditions.
Reishi is available in various forms, similar to shiitake. You can find it as a powdered herb, which can be easily added to smoothies, soups, or even a cup of tea.
Personally, I love adding reishi to hot cacao, especially in the cooler months, and to my smoothies during summer.
This makes it an excellent choice for daily immune support and stress resilience.
Additionally, reishi can be found in capsule and liquid forms. I often use liquid herbs in my practice to provide a personalised approach tailored to my clients’ specific needs. Many of my formulations include reishi to ensure my clients receive the best support possible.
Incorporating reishi into your routine can be a simple and effective way to enhance your immune system, support brain health, and promote overall well-being.
3. Cordyceps
Renowned for its ability to enhance energy, stamina, and support the immune system.
Cordyceps is a powerhouse for those needing a boost.
It’s particularly beneficial for clients who experience recurrent infections or struggle with immune system issues, whether from frequent winter illnesses or autoimmune conditions. If you constantly battle fatigue and feel like you’re hitting a wall, Cordyceps can be a game-changer.
Like other medicinal mushrooms, Cordyceps is an adaptogen, helping your body adjust to stress and environmental changes. It also has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects can effectively control the inflammatory response associated with recurrent infections. This can help break the cycle of inflammation and support a balanced immune response.
Cordyceps offers significant support for those dealing with immune imbalances and accompanying fatigue. It’s especially valuable during times of high stress.
Many mums, for instance, are under immense pressure, juggling sick children, work, and personal responsibilities. When the entire family is frequently unwell, the stress can be overwhelming. Cordyceps shines in these scenarios, providing much-needed support.
Cordyceps is available in several forms, including powdered, capsule, and liquid. Like reishi, I often add Cordyceps to my hot cacao in winter for a warming, energising boost. It can also be incorporated into smoothies and soups, offering a versatile way to enhance your diet.
Using Cordyceps as part of your daily routine can help maintain energy levels, support the immune system, and build resilience against stress and illness. It’s a fantastic addition for anyone looking to enhance their overall well-being, especially during the demanding winter months.
I often create combinations of these medicinal mushrooms based on my clients’ specific needs. If you’re struggling with your immune system or looking to boost your defences against winter infections, I’d love to help.

Ready to kick start Gut Health? Book a Call!
This is how gut microbes can influence weight!
Probiotics can help you gain weight or lose weight by interacting with our genetics, food and metabolism.
And yes, I did say lose or gain weight……..
Firstly, let me explain that the trillions of microbes in the gut need to be varied, meaning that there should be a large variety of species. There are many different species (or breeds) of microbes, and they all have their place in aiding health — the more variety and balance, the better health results.
Back to the weight loss or weight gain issue….
Do you eat yogurt and berries for breakfast? Thinking that it’s helping you lose weight?
Well, Lactobacillus acidophilus (like the species found in yoghurt) has been connected to weight gain.
I am not saying throw your yoghurt and berries in the bin. Instead, I am suggesting looking at the overall picture. If Lactobacillus acidophilus is the predominant micro-organism of the gut, then weight gain can result.
It is about the variety of species of gut microbes. Imagine if we only have trained german shepherd guard dogs in the world. It may be a safe world, but I am sure that other breeds may be more suitable as a family pet.
While Lactobacillus acidophilus is associated with weight gain, other Lactobacillus species correlate with weight loss.
Species like Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus gasseri, and Bifidobacteria animalis have been found to support weight loss.
Want to lose weight?
Look at your gut flora to support your goal.
Tests can be performed to identify the predominant species of the gut, and specific species can be utilised to support weight changes.
